Bob Brookmeyer

Bob Brookmeyer (1929- 2011) received the highest honors that the United States bestows upon jazz musicians when he became an NEA Jazz Master in 2006. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, the valve trombonist, pianist, arranger, and composer has left a lasting musical legacy, which includes, notably, his pioneering work with Gerry Mulligan, Jimmy Giuffre and Clark Terry, and also a decade playing in studios in Los Angeles. His teaching, both in the Netherlands and at the NEC in Boston was highly influential, and his compositional style reflects a profound study of composers such as Lutosławski, Stravinsky, Debussy, Ligeti, and Bartók.
